Our source of power as we need it
A broad range of different electrochemical systems and battery technologies exist today. There are currently four battery families dominating the automotive and industrial battery market:
-
Lead based technology
-
Nickel based technology
-
Lithium based technology
-
Sodium based technology
The selection of one of these technologies depends on application requirements regarding performance, life, safety and cost.
LEAD BASED TECHNOLOGY
Lead-acid technology is the most widely used electrochemical system, used in numerous applications from back-up for uninterruptible power supplies and grid energy storage, to traction in battery electric vehicles and for starting, lighting and ignition (SLI) in conventional combustion engine vehicles. It is composed of several sub-technologies distinguished by battery design and manufacturing process.
-
Flooded Lead-Acid Battery
-
Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid Battery (VRLA) with electrolyte immobilized by a GEL
-
Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid Battery (VRLA) with electrolyte immobilized by an AGM
-
Vented Lead-Acid Battery
NICKEL BASED TECHNOLOGY
Nickel based batteries are used for standby as well as other applications, including Electric Vehicles (EV), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) and for starting aircraft.
LITHIUM BASED TECHNOLOGY
Both the high level of energy and power makes the Li-Ion system very suitable for various applications, ranging from high energy to high power. Lithium based batteries can be found in electric vehicles and aerospace and renewable energy applications.
SODIUM BASED TECHNOLOGY
Sodium based batteries have a high energy density, long cycle life and can operate in harsh environments such as temperatures of -40°C to +60°C. For these reasons they can be found in application in energy grid storage, such as storing energy from intermittent renewable energy sources that is micro-hydro, wind and solar power.
